Chapter Ten

Dusk had settled into darkness as Chuck marched through Hank’s house. When Hank waved him into the study, he almost told him to go to hell.

Then he reminded himself he wasn’t mad at Hank. He was mad at himself for letting PJ’s words get to him. For letting his father’s rejection taint his life for seven long years. And for the painful reminder of the family he missed so much it hurt.

Some of the tension seeped out as he entered Hank’s private domain.

The older man didn’t waste time. “Just heard from the guys checking out PJ’s apartment.”

A lump of cold, hard lead settled into Chuck’s gut. “What did they find?”

Hank stopped behind his desk. “You don’t want PJ to go back tonight.”

“That bad?”

“Someone broke into her apartment and tossed it.” Hank pulled a bottle of whiskey off the counter behind his desk, grabbed a couple of shot glasses and held them up. “Care for some?”

Chuck shook his head. He hadn’t had a drink since he’d returned to Wild Oak Canyon. As much as he craved one to steady his nerves, he had to keep a clear head. Charlie and PJ needed that much from him. “I had just changed the locks on the doors.”

Hank’s eyes narrowed. “As far as the guys reported, it didn’t look like forced entry. Whoever got in picked the lock or had a key.”

“Why would they toss the place?”

“I don’t know. There weren’t any messages left behind. PJ would have to tell us if anything was missing.” Hank set the bottle back on the counter unopened. “Point is, it’s not safe for her to return to the apartment.”

Chuck dragged in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “And you want me to break it to her?”

Hank shook his head. “I’ll do it.”

“You might want to.” A wry smile tugged at Chuck’s lips. “She’s not too happy with me right now.”

“I’ll see what I can do to smooth her feathers.”

“Good luck. She doesn’t take kindly to feather-smoothing.” Chuck nodded toward the computer on Hank’s desk. “Your guy Pendley find the hacker yet?”

“He’s still working on it. He has to go back to a week-old recovery backup. Once he has it installed and the new firewall program in place, he’ll work on finding the hacker. Right now he’s just trying to keep the bastard out of my bank accounts.”

“Seems like he has a bone to pick with you. Doesn’t sound like the work of a Mexican Mafia man. Don’t they usually go for more guerrilla tactics like chopping off heads and drive-by shootings?”

“I have to admit, these attacks don’t make much sense. The only connection they have to me is PJ and Charlie.”

“Your Achilles’ heel?” Chuck offered. “They were an easy target as long as they were outside your perimeter.”

“My perimeter has been breached via the computer. I don’t know what help I’m going to be other than providing firepower to a game of cat and mouse.”

“Think back. Have you made anyone angry lately?
